TBYC  NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 2000

FROM  THE   COMMODORE'S  DECK
Rick Brady (Glaoch Ne Mara)

Well, here I am again, just like a bad dream!  Those that worked on the board with me the last time are still tired from the work we all did to make our Yacht Club a success.  We are challenged again to sharpen our dunce caps and think up a plan to return the interest in our endeavors. I have several lofty goals this year for you all, so hold on!  We will be a new club soon, as a lot of our "old" members have left for cruising destinations of our dreams.  They will be missed, but we are working on new members to fill the void, and have some great newbees.  So.............come to the next cruise with the notion of hosting a new boater, befriending an unfamiliar face, and getting the new season going! I have a plan to reward members for recruiting, helping out with assignments, putting in extra work, selling club wares, and ATTENDANCE!!!!!  Some other perks will of course be for officers, who work very hard to ensure your pleasure and safety on the cruises.  So let's all get this year going early, sponsor new members, and have a great year!!  (There are more rewards than fresh elk sausage).

REGARDING   DUES

The cutoff date to get last year's (decade's) membership rate of $20.00 is February 15, as noted above and in previous communications. Dues after 2/15 will be $30.00.

March 1st is the cutoff date to get your name in this year's club roster. The roster will begin printing in March. Space will be left in the back of the roster to add names of new members and names of members who are late in renewing their membership.

Also, the paid membership as of March 1st  will be our new basis for who will receive the newsletter. Although the email version is, basically, free, the hard copies are not. We don't want to utilize the money in the TBYC  treasury to send newsletters  to those who are no longer interested in maintaining membership. Of course, as dues are received, and new members added, the newsletter mailing list will be promptly updated.

FACTS AND FICTION FROM THE FEBRUARY TBYC OFFICERS MEETING

Membership is growing slowly and with our first cruise this coming weekend we are really hoping to see some "old" faces as well as some "new" ones.  Saturday night's potluck theme is "Italian" so save up your carbo allocation for this one.  Invite a friend and win points in Commodore Rick's 2000 TBYC Contest.

We do have access to the fire pit on Coon Island and we need fire wood.  If you are planning on going and don't have room to haul it; or would just like to donate some fire wood, call Dave Creek at (503) 312-1109.  The 10-Speed is great for hauling special cargo!

The Web Page is up and looks great.  Check it out at http://top-golf.com/TBYC.  There will be something for everyone and John Hoefer is seeking Club pictures and will link all Columbia River Yacht Clubs in the near future.  Thanks, John, for all your hard work and maintenance!

Several avenues are being pursued to contract with one provider for embroidery and/or silk screening work for the Club.  The goal is to have an on-going order form and catalogs for members to order specialty items in advance of cruise events -or just because it is something you want-without tying up club funds.  Watch for more details in the March Newsletter which will hopefully include an order form.

We have already received reciprocity letters from Queen City Yacht Club in Seattle and Port Ludlow Yacht Club in Port Ludlow, Washington.  If you are planning a trip and would like to take advantage of these privileges, please call Lorraine at (503) 283-4443 or e-mail at raineec@yahoo.com.

See you on the water,

TBYC  ANNUAL  MEETING,  JANUARY  11,  2000

The annual meeting was held Saturday evening, January 11, at the Courtyard Marriott on Marine Drive. The TBYC crowd of 45, or so, members, had the lounge area, complete with comfy fireplace, and adjoining dining area to ourselves. The buffet and the service were great!

Jon Bake thanked everyone for their participation and help in his 1999 term.  He explained the officer board's decision to increase the club's annual dues
to $30.00. Those people who get their dues in before February 15 will still be able to take advantage of the $20.00 rate.

Jon introduced the year 2000 officers and passed the officer's insignias from the outgoing officers to the incoming officers.

Our new commodore, Rick Brandy took the floor and outlined some of his goals for the coming year including an incentive plan to encourage inviting new folks to cruises, participating in cruises, participating in other club activities, and even further building esprit de corps.

Rick reviewed with the membership that the monthly "officer's meeting" is open to all members and their participation is strongly encouraged.  Meetings have been held on the first Thursday of the month. The location of the monthly meeting is tentatively going to be at Gordon and Cheryl Spalding's home on Tomahawk drive. If the day or location changes, you will be notified in the newsletter.

Our new web site was explained and members were encouraged to log on.  There will be a password-protected area where such 'identification sensitive' things, such as the club's membership roster, will be available. There is also a, "For Sale" area where members are encouraged to list their nautical items for sale (Webmaster note: any item may be listed for sale, not just nautical). Your year 2000 membership cards will have both the email address and the password printed on them.

The meeting was adjourned and the members took advantage of the comfortable setting to sit and visit with each other until the lights began to be dimmed.

MAY  20th,  2000,  SWAP  MEET

An early note to, "remember the spring swap meet!" Each year the spring swap meet gets better but there is still a lot of potential left untapped. TBYC is going to try to be more high profile with the spring swap meet this year.

TBYC is going to advertise in the regional and local boating and sporting publications. Commodore Rick Brandy will also be taking invitations to the other area yacht clubs when he attends this month's Columbia River Yachting Association Meeting. Hopefully, this will deliver a strong message to area boaters that we have spaces for reasonable rent and good stuff to peruse and it's available to everyone, not just members of TBYC.

We anticipate a wide variety of goods, including dinghies, board boats, and even a Hobie Cat. Bargain hunters should be very pleased. Got too much stuff already? Tired of your spouse dragging stuff home? Sort through that stuff and bring it on down. You don't have to reserve a spot ahead of time. Just show up with $5 in hand and a space is yours.  How can you lose? See you there!

WORD  OF  THE  MONTH

Posh (as in posh accommodations):  Posh is the first initials of 4 words describing the more favorable accommodations, years ago, on British ships sailing for colonial India. To avoid being on the sunny (hot) side of the ship in the afternoon, it was best to make sure your cabin was, "Port outbound, starboard home."

It's here............TBYC's very own web site.  Check it out at http://www.top-golf.com/TBYC, it lists all the latest information.
