MAY SWAP MEET AND SAILORS FAIR

The days are ticking away and it's nearly time for this year's swap meet. If you haven't done it yet, you had better get busy and scour out the storage area and examine the garage for all those things you really should get out of your life and into someone else's.  A space at the swap meet, held at Tomahawk Bay Moorage's parking lot, only costs five dollars.  No pre-registration is needed.  Just show up bright and early and look out for the crowds.

This year we have really gone all out for promotion.  Errr, that is Commodore Rick has.  Maybe you've seen the fliers?  They have the burgees from every yacht club in the area on them.  And that's who is also pumping their membership up for the "Metro Area yacht Club Swap Meet and Sailors Fair."  In addition to getting all of the yacht clubs on board to promote the event, there are articles in Freshwater News and 48 Degree's North.  We also plan to have the TV stations list it with their "Weekend Event" segments on Saturday morning.

You got goodies you want to get rid of? You got goodies you want to buy? Saturday May the 20th in Tomahawk Bay Moorage's parking lot is the place to be. Be there early.  The club will be selling fresh coffee and donuts for you to eat while you peruse the booty. Rent a space. Have a ball.
We'll see you all there.  (Oh, and bring a friend.)

SAFE BOATING WEEK IS MAY 20th-26th

Now that we're all getting into the boating spirit, remember to assess your equipment.  Wash those PFD's and check them out, check your survival equipment - does anything need fresh batteries, what are the expiration dates?  Did you get that renewal for your boat, have you received your documentation sticker(if you're a documented boat).  Save yourself the embarrassment or fine if you are stopped by the Oregon State Marine Patrol.  I have picked up the following information from the Willamette YC, newsletter "Scuttlebutt."

1.  Fines for marine violations have jumped 75%.  The base fine for Class B violations(formerly known as Class B infractions is now $175 under ordinary circumstances, and $235 under circumstances of accident, injury or risk.

2.  Leaving the scene of a boating accident is now a Class C Felony(ORS 830.475(2).

3.  Furnishing false information to an officer engaged in boating enforcement is now a Class A misdemeanor, with $613 fine or $1113 if an accident is involved.

4. Officers ARE ENCOURAGED TO CITE MULTIPLE OFFENSES NOW by the re-design of the Marine Citation form, which like the Traffic citation, can now list up to three violations on one ticket!  You know that if you are short more than one PFD for your boat's complement of persons, each PFD short is a separate violation, as is each piece of required safety equipment.

5.  The "Termination" law, passed three years ago, has now been encoded into a criminal statute, OR 830.380/383, Class B misdemeanor, $513 fine, $913 if accident.  This law says that if an especially hazardous condition exists, such as overloading or fuel in the bilge, officers may terminate the boat's voyage, order them to the nearest safe landing, and require repairs/corrections to be made before the boat may return to the water.  Officers may now write a huge ticket for this problem as well.

JUNE 10th, TBYC's ANNUAL CLEAN-UP THE EAST END OF HAYDEN ISLD.

A number of years ago TBYC was given the opportunity to be part of the "Oregon Adopt-A-River program."  We chose as our project the East end of Hayden Island, from the lower opening at Tomahawk Bay moorage around the end of the island, back to Sundance Marina.

The Oregon Adopt-A-River is a broad-based stewardship effort to help clean up and preserve Oregon waterways.  This program was created by the 1993 Oregon Legislature, to help people learn the importance of watershed health and be good stewards towards our land.  It is administered by SOLV in partnership with the Oregon State Marine Board.  More than 1000 miles of river have been adopted by volunteers.

We are having our annual clean up day, June 10th.  Meet at 10AM in the parking lot, at the far East end of Hayden Island, near the old sand pit at Tomahawk Bay.  Dress appropriately, as this is a rain or shine project.  Don't forget those gloves.  Drinks will be provided by the club, and the trash bags for all the junk, bring your enthusiasm.  We'll collect all the junk we find and put it in the parking lot, and take pictures for the records.  Ten Speed Bar, Grill and Tug (Dave/Lorraine Creek) have offered the use of their pontoon boat to act as a barge.

In my haste to get the March 2000 newsletter printed, I neglected to put the following article in the newsletter. Cheryl S.

SOLITUDE PREVAILED ...

... as Dock Holiday (Allen, Vice Commodore of Power, and Virginia) moored at the Sand Island Docks on March 11/12th, TBYC's intended destination. Having an overwhelming desire to have the best interests of TBYC at heart, we felt someone MIGHT show up there. We enjoyed the gentle rock and roll of Dock Holiday at the dock and the quietness of the area. Sleeping, eating, resting, relaxing and reading were on our agenda that weekend. We missed you all!!

(Thank you Allen and Virginia for thinking of everyone. My apologies for not getting this into the last newsletter. Cheryl S.)

MARCH CRUISE - GOVERNMENT   ISLAND

We're often asked to be inventive when the dinner themes for the TBYC cruises are announced, and April 8th's "FRENCH" theme was no exception!!  Our group is very creative in the galley of their boats.

With the weather promising to be decent, we wanted to have the ambiance of a nice cozy fire with our "FRENCH" themed meal.  The word being put out was bring some dry wood so we could use the firepit facilities on Saturday evening. We were hoping that our resident brush pile burner, Bev Snow would attend. Our Commode Door, Rick (road flares) Brady was out saving the world from a massive "sage rat" infestation in Eastern Oregon and would not be attending, and Gordon (gasoline) Spalding had thrown the last of his bad gasoline on the previous slash pile. So, Bev we were counting on you and Udo.  We were one step up on the problem of wet cottonwood firewood, as Jim Sulak promised to bring a splitting maul. He wasn't going to be the manpower on the end of the maul, which was to be left to the younger crowd.  That younger crowd turned out to be Dave Creek and Kim Krumm. We thank you both for splitting enough wood to get us by the evening!!!

So---as Friday dawned, the parade was under way to Government Island, our cruising destination.  Those boats in attendance were: Aquarius/Bev&Udo, Bliss/Jim & Karen, Full Sail/John & Linda, Four Teaz/Carl, Cheryl, Meghan and friend, Dock Holiday/Allen and Virginia, Illusion/Gene and Bernice (new members), Refuge/Ken and Gayle(new boat for them), Ten-Speed, Bar, Grill and Tug/Dave and Lorraine, Rubie/Lisa and Kim, Lazy BII/Jon and Cindy, Cheers/Jim and Kim, Abyss/Bob and Chang, Aquila Two(alias Utopia)/Gordon and Cheryl and the MIGHTY tender of Mursea/Jim and Cathy. Additionally, a potential new member, Carl(no boat name yet) from the same moorage as Jon and Cindy/Dave and Lorraine.  TBYC was joined on the docks by the Vancouver Yacht Club and the Hunter Sail Boat Club.

As the dinner hour approached Saturday, the fire was lit and the tables were set. John and Linda decorated the main dish table in the true FRENCH theme, with a tablecloth, wine bottles, grapes, cheese's, etc. You two are too clever.  The menu varied from Coq Au Vin, French onion soup, fruit floating in champagne, chocolate mousse, French crepes (freshly made that evening), salads, cheeses and other main dishes.  No one went away hungry.  Topping off the meal was the celebration of Jon and Cindy Bake's birthdays with cake.  Calories, calories, calories!!!
We all enjoyed the  rest of the evening around the fire pit thanks to Jim, Dave, and Kim.

The smell of coffee brought us all out of our boats Sunday morning, and breakfast was soon underway.  Allen manned the griddle frying 8lbs of pepper bacon, Virginia made enough pancake batter to feed approximately 35 people and Lorraine manned another frying pan cooking eggs short order style.  Our yacht club was the envy of the docks, and possibly, we enticed several boats to join our club, as we were having "TOO MUCH FUN."  Soon breakfast was done, the clean up began(thanks Kim/Lisa and everyone else).  Good byes were said, and people started leaving for their respective moorage.  Several boats stayed and left the following day.  They enjoyed the solitude and worked on their tans.

8 APRIL 2000 - TBYC AT EAST DOCK by Carl Taylor

For the second time in as many months, TBYC was again at Government Island East Dock.  This time we shared space with Vancouver yacht Club, and by Saturday afternoon, rafting along side was common.  No problem! To say that we all had a great time is an understatement, and will be noted by others in this newsletter.

As is the case on all cruises, we are always checking to see who would be the next to arrive and where we could best accommodate them, based on boat size.  This bit of activity kept our Fleet Captain, Gordon Spalding busy, throughout most of the day.  We had hoped to see Mursea meet up with us, but understood that they still had one engine off line.  But then it happened.  Late in the day there was a radio call from Jim and Cathy(Mursea) that they were on the way, but on one engine and did we have room for them.  A quick decision was made to raft them to Utopia and so lines were prepared, and extra hands were aboard to assist in the rafting process.  And here they came - on one engine as earlier stated, however, they neglected to tell us that the one engine was an outboard, the boat was Mursea's dinghy.  After much comment, lots of grins, the dinghy was docked.  Yes, we were glad to see Jim and Cathy.  Gordon dismissed the rafting party aboard Utopia.

If I read names correctly, Murphy must be Irish.  It would seem that I am always encountering something different with our Irish friends.  But what the hey!  Friends are friends, even though they are not Welsh.

OPENING DAY PARADE

With helicopters overhead and the Hayden Island fireboat spraying water, the Opening Day parade got underway.  The review boats were anchored near the Marine Patrol office on Marine Drive.  As a Division Captain with the U.S. Coast Guard, Zvonko and Jill Trninich (The Great Escape) were on one of the review vessels to salute TBYC's participation in this years parade.  TBYC was represented by, Dock Holiday(Allen and Virginia), with guests, Carl and Cheryl Taylor, Bernice Koch, Commodore Rick Brady and "Ten Speed Bar, grill and Tug(Dave Creek) with guests Gordon and Cheryl Spalding.

The Columbia River Yachting Association puts on the event and this years Host Club was Hayden Island Yacht Club.  Events started with coffee and doughnuts(at 5:30am) on the dock put on by Columbia Crossings, hosted by our own John & Linda V.(Full Sail).  And the partying began.  TBYC's participating members agreed to meet and gather around L Dock at Tomahawk Bay to get organized.  A fete within its self!!!.  Only Allen and Virginia(Dock Holiday) were prepared, they had done this before, was my guess.  The TBYC banner was hung on the end boat, Ten Speed Bar, grill and Tug(Dave Creek) and we pulled out to find our place in line. We were still waiting for Lazy BII(Jon and Cindy), they radioed they had engine trouble.  Likely story we thought, but low and behold, they were in fact anchored near their home with engine trouble. Awesome can only describe what it was like on the river with hundreds of boats, jockeying for position.  Everyone was in their designated places, now all we needed to do was fall in behind Multnomah Channel yacht Club.  it was a beautiful day on the river, but pretty intimidating to be followed up the river towards the reviewing boats by boats that all you could see were their bows.

We all again gather at L Dock, and were joined by Lazy BII and Aquarius(Bev and Udo) for lunch put on by the crew on Dock Holiday. Some stayed and enjoyed the rays of the sun, and several left to go to Hayden Island Yacht Club for the balance of the festivities.  Which included no host cocktails to be followed by dinner and then dancing. TBYCwas represented by Jim/Cathy Murphy, Jon/Cindy Bake, Lisa Fuez, John/Linda Villanueva, Commodore Rick Brady, Dave/Lorraine Creek, and guest Cathy Jo, Gordon/Cheryl Spalding, Zvonko/Jill Trinich.  To those hardy few who stayed until the wee hours(you'll know who your are!!!)  A good time was hand by all that attended.
