TBYC NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 1999
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Journey with us on November 20th
and 21st to St. Helens. Those club
members wishing to participate,
but not take their boats, can drive and
join us for 'dinner out' at
one of the local restaurants. Appetizers
will be served early on the
docks. For those interested in 'breakfast
out,' join other club members
at the St. Helens Cafe Sunday morning. For
those early risers, coffee (camp
or regular) is always available on the
dock. St. Helens offers great
stores to browse for gifts, antiques,
junk, and whatever! You can
even go to the movie - within walking
distance of the dock - at one
of the least expensive theatres in the
state of Oregon.
Join us!!
December 4th and 5th find us
journeying up the Willamette to Riverplace.
We'll eat dinner out at the
Newport Bay restaurant. For those who don't
want to take their boats, you
can also drive and join other club members
at this one too! It's time to
enjoy the lights and festivities of the
promenade, and walk to the famous
Saturday market. It's a prelude to the
holiday season. Come relax,
laugh, and enjoy with other members before
the holiday rush begins.
TBYC Christmas party will be
held at Jon and Cindy Bake's floating home,
on December 11th Their address
is 11684 North Island Cove Lane,
Portland. The club will provide
the turkey and ham. Those attending are
to bring a potluck dish and
whatever your beverage of choice is
(excluding water). We'll have
a white elephant gift exchange, value less
than $5.00. We are going to
have a raffle and members are asked to bring
something to add to the raffle,
very much like what we did for the pig
roast. The club will provide
tow or three larger ticket raffle items.
Members can bring an unwrapped
toy for the fire department's Toy and
Joy. A brief business meeting
will be held and we'll hold elections for
officers for the coming year.
A list of possible nominees will be
developed before the meeting
and nominations will also be taken from the
floor at this meeting.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TBYC CHRISTMAS
PARTY AT JON AND CINDY BAKE'S HOME.
Jon and Cindy live in the floating
home community called Lotus Isle
Cove. It is located on Hayden
Island behind Lotus Island Park on the
right hand side of North Tomahawk
Drive. The park is situated between
602 N. Tomahawk Drive (the blue
condos right after the firehouse) and
the gated community called Lotus
Isle. Parking is as allowed on the
street (North Tomahawk Drive).
The easiest way is to take the Jantzen
Beach exit off I-5, and go towards
the Columbia Crossings moorage
office. Go past the firehouse
on the right, past the blue condos on the
right. Find a legal place to
park on the street near the park. Proceed
through the park to the floating
community gate. The gate will be open
and - if it's not - there are
directions for phoning and being buzzed
through go down the ramp and
follow the signs.
WANTED: WILLING HANDS TO BE CLUB OFFICERS
It's time to think about running
for club office. And we're thirsty for
some new blood! At the Christmas
party, December 11, we nominate and
vote on officers for the coming
year. This year we're going to develop a
list of candidates prior to
the moment of nomination. What a concept!
Do you think you're not quite
ready to seize control and run for
Commodore? Be one of the Captains
and build up to it. Do you want to
take a bit more of an undercover
role? Those are available too. Think it
would be too conceited to suggest
yourself as an officer? Think again!
If you are interested in becoming
an officer, or know of someone who is,
please (we beg of you), contact
Carl Taylor, 1 503 286 3215, Rick Brady,
1 503 286 7325, or Allen Buntjer,
1 503 289 1663. Or, email us. Below

EVENTS OF THE PAST MONTH
FALL SWAP MEET
The Fall swap meet was held
September 25th. Despite a somewhat low
profile, there were a reasonable
number of spaces sold and a very nice
assortment of equipment and
goods offered for resale. Some wonderful
bargains were to be had. Dinghies,
fenders, radio equipment, books,
cookware, hardware, a vibrator
(still available - call Carl Taylor), and
much more, were offered for
sale at very reasonable prices.
In addition to renting the spaces
at $5.00 each, the club sold coffee
and donuts. We always do well
with the coffee. It's good strong campfire
coffee, just the ticket first
thing in the morning, and any grounds you
might get in your cup are absolutely
free. TBYC cleared $121.00.
Our next swap meet will be in
the spring. The date is yet to be set but
it is usually in the month of
May. Start setting aside those things
you're tired of moving from
here to there and bring them to sell at the
swap meet. Just show up, give
us five bucks, and a space will be yours.
If you think you don't have
enough to justify renting your own space, go
in with a friend. Looking through
the surprising variety of goodies at
these twice annual treasure
troves is just as much fun as finally
selling your own excess stuff
and putting an end to shuffling it around.
HALLOWEEN CRUISE
Trick or treats were abundant
for all that attended the Halloween
Cruise, October 23rd and 24th
at Sand Island. TBYC was represented by
Lazy B II (Jon and Cindy Bake),
Mursea (Kathy and Jim Murphy), Drummer
(John and Sue Luck), Mystic
Wind (Kelley, Darnise, and sons), Bristle
Fashion ( Ian and Ann Alyse
Turner). With over 187 boats present
(combined club event), the trick
or treating must have been awesome for
the approximately 400 people
who attended. There were numerous booths on
the spook walk with Waverly
Yacht Club hosting a "kids only" booth. The
contests were pumpkin carving,
costumes, decorated boat, and decorated
animal. something for everyone
(man and beast).
TBYC OFFICERS MEETING 11/4/99
All officers were present at
the home of Jon and Cindy Bake (thanks for
the hospitality).
Old business included:
1. Discussion of the Beacon
Rock/Camas Cruise and the Halloween cruise.
New business included:
1. The upcoming cruise to St.
Helens November 20 and 21.
2. The Christmas party which
will be held at Jon and Cindy Bakes
floating home 12/11. The club
will supply the turkey and ham and the
membership will bring potluck
dishes including BYOB. There will be a
white elephant gift exchange.
Club members will be asked to bring items
for the raffle. We did this
at the pig roast and it was very successful.
The club will supply two or
three larger ticket raffle items. Members
may also bring an unwrapped
toy to donate to the fire department's
Christmas Toy and Joy effort.
3. Upcoming elections and developing
a list of at least one nomination
for each office prior to the
election at the Christmas party. At the
party, more names will be solicited.
4. Jim Murphy reported on the
CRYA meeting he regularly attends. Among
the topics discussed at the
last CRYA meeting were the Corps of
Engineers plans to dredge the
Columbia channel three feet deeper. A
location to deposit the spoils
of this dredging would be needed. Martin
Slough is being considered as
a possible deposition site.
5. Rick Brady, who teaches at
CCC, offered to pick up the bags of pop
cans that amass at the college
and cash them in (with the generous help
of Cheryl Spalding.) Proceeds
will go to our fund for the charitable
donation that TBYC makes at
the end of each year. A separate accounting
will be kept of this money.
So far, $21.00 has been collected. Thank-you
Rick for your good heart and
concern for others.
6. Rick Brady reminded us of
the need to keep in mind the upcoming Clean
River project the club takes
part in. More will be developed on that in
coming months. Helpers needed.
7. A canvas cover was donated
to the club. It is being retrofitted by
Jon Bake and Rick Brady to help
provide shelter on the docks for the
rainy cruises.
8. The new email format for
the newsletter and the new publicists were
discussed. We will try to get
some pictures out in the newsletters in
future.
9. John Hoefer has offered to
provide a website for TBYC at his web
domain. We would be able to
have updates, reminders, and photos. The
officers thought this would
be a fantastic idea. Thanks John. We are
very fortunate to have members
with diverse talents.
10. Per the treasurers report
the club currently has $1209.00 in the
checking account.
NEWSLETTER ON LINE
We are going to be sending the
TBYC newsletter by email to those who
would like to receive it in
that fashion. The rest will continue to
receive the letter the old fashioned
way. If you have changed your email
address, or if we do not have
your email address, please send it to:
duvals@cyberis.net. We'll add
you to the list, get the news and updates
to you faster and ... save some
money in postage.
CLUB EVENT PICTURES
We have some wonderful pictures
from the past couple of cruises but have
not included them in this newsletter
due to space constraints. We also
need to know who CAN NOT or
DOES NOT want to receive pictures via their
email.
WORD OF THE MONTH - from the
dictionary of Nautical Words and Terms, by
C.W. T. Layton.
SALVAGE: The saving of a vessel,
or cargo, from extraordinary peril or
danger. 2. Compensation or reward
given for the salving of property in
peril.
(Note: make sure, when calling
for professional assistance on the water,
that you set the terms and price
before accepting help lest your
situation and rescue be declared
a "salvage" job after the fact - very
expensive indeed.)
